Recently I came across her first published short story, "Outpost", written about the time she turned eighteen. After first appearing in a 1948 fanzine, MZB entered the story into an <i>Amazing Stories</i> competition for best fanzine story of 1948. She was awarded first prize and $50. The story is long out of copyright and print, which I regard as a shame. It's such a masterpiece! I post it here for your reading pleasure.<br />

Solar Interstellar Exploration Force — landed their first ship since the Sol-Capella
war on Deneb Six, they expected to find a world bare of humanity. SIEF had
never before entered the star-cluster where Deneb’s fifteen planets circled. But
the planet, although incredibly desolate, bare of all remnants of civilized man,
had not always been so. Men had been there. Solarians. <o:p></o:p></div>

This was never made
public. The Terran government, happy in its communalism, thought it would be
detrimental to Terran morale should they know the fate of the Domesmen — that
brave little band, exiled years ago from the Solar System, under the leadership
of one of the greatest men the system has ever known, John Barss. The little
band which Barss controlled had rebelled against the rigidly-organized Venus
Autarchy, and vanished — completely. And the one trace of men which SIEF found
on Deneb Six was a small fortress, deep in the forests, set within an enclosed space.
The surrounding terrain bore traces of fire, but this fortress had been spared
or had survived, and within it the men of SIEF found traces of the expedition —
as well as the diary of that great leader. <o:p></o:p></div>

The document was

We came here last

planet of Deneb. There is good water, breathable air, plant life with a
chlorophyll base, and here, perhaps, we can settle with our women and children and
build for ourselves the life that we could never win within the System. Tonight,
we called a mass meeting and I proposed to destroy the ship that brought us here.
Arn and Conner ask why we should tie ourselves down to one planet when there is
an entire sun-system to conquer, but I am afraid that, with the ship, there might
be too much temptation to return to Sol. <o:p></o:p></div>

only refuge lies in cutting all ties with the Solarians completely. Things

<b>Spotlighting Forgotten
SF Authors and Their Works</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="text-indent: 0.5in;">Much wonderful science fiction has been written for the last hundred
years or so, but the great majority of it has been forgotten or is no longer
read today. Fans, if they read any work written last century, usually limit
themselves to award winners. Maybe a few dig down for the slightly less
well-known works of their favorite one or two authors. Many academics consider the
science fiction genre as ephemeral, unworthy of study, and view the demise of
its authors’ works as proof. They're mistaken, of course. Any person with
imagination and insight into human nature can easily predict that in 2250, twentieth
century science fiction will still be read. Why? Science fiction engages the
imagination, pure and simple. Many of the older works of science fiction still make
for great reading, but have become forgotten. They are not lost! They only
await rediscovery.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="text-indent: 0.5in;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="text-indent: 0.5in;">Science Fiction Resurrection serves as a vehicle for recovering lost works
of science fiction. I hope this site becomes an indispensable source of news to
you, a way to rediscover authors and their works, a source you just can't find elsewhere.
Not only will you find book reviews here, but I do original research, write
bibliographies, literary biographies of authors, conduct analysis of genres and
subgenres, write essays that overview periods, look into obscure magazines, showcase
SF artists, SF authors, delve into other SF media. I may even
post audio interviews of living authors that I conduct. This website is the
vehicle for me to express my passion about science fiction’s glorious history.
So sit back, strap up, and read on!</span></div>
<br />Dan Quigleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17883507268969517240noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2359173482617125328.post-24469989186939177112019-08-13T13:50:00.000-04:002019-09-07T01:25:15.453-04:00Major Science Fiction Authors<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">This list of the biggest-selling science fiction novelists aims to be comprehensive. My goal is to include every science fiction author who has written at least one science fiction novel and whose science fiction novels have a total of at least 500 Goodreads (GR) ratings. The resulting list in no way reflects quality, but does provide all widely-read (or top-selling) authors. Since not many readers delve much into older works, the list is necessarily skewed in favor of more recent SF authors.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
The list is ordered alphabetically by author surname, followed by the dates the author lived, the number (in the thousands) of how many GR ratings their SF novels have received, and their top three rated SF novels. In the future I will add more novels than the top three if their fourth, fifth, and so-on has at least 1000 GR ratings. I'm the only compiler of this list, so there's bound to be mistakes and omissions in it, hard as I try to keep everything correct. If you spot one, or several, I'd be so grateful if you'd let me know.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">One topic of academic discussion in Science Fiction circles is how to divide the periods in which it was written. Doing this makes great sense when SF was in its infancy. There were not so many authors writing different kinds of SF. A few influential editors dictated much of the style SF had to be written in for it to see publication. After 1976 or so, SF, if it's to be divided and written about in parts, is better treated by sub-genres. This is because by this time there were so many vehicles for publishing SF, and so many different styles, that defining SF by decade becomes meaningless.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
The periods are actually designated by science fiction historians as follows:<br />
<br />
1920-1937: Pulp era<br />
1938-1946: Early (or First) Golden Age<br />
1947-1959: Later (or Second) Golden Age<br />
<br />
Here's one reference: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Age_of_Science_Fiction">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Age_of_Science_Fiction</a><br />
<br />
One can take it a bit further:<br />
<br />
1805-1919: Early science fiction<br />
1920-1930: 1920s Early Pulp<br />
1931-1937: 1930s True Pulp<br />
.....<br />
1960-1976 New Wave science fiction<br />
<br />
The distinction between Pulp eras is Isaac Asimov's (<i>Before the Golden Age: A Science Fiction Anthology of the 1930s</i>, page 34): "With the November 1930 issue, <i>Wonder Stories</i> went pulp size and left <i>Amazing Stories</i> as the only large-size science fiction magazine."<br />
<br />
I consider Jean-Baptiste Cousin de Grainville's <i>Le Dernier Homme</i> (1805) to be the first work of true rather than proto science fiction. It's a really great poem: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Dernier_Homme">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Dernier_Homme</a>. Following that you have the two wonderful Mary Shelley science fiction novels (1818 and 1826), and so on.<br />
<br />
Periods more recent than 1976 break down better by genre, as I stated earlier. For proof I offer the fact that no further names for more recent periods have become widely accepted.<br />
<br />
Here, again, are the periods as I will refer to them in this blog in chronological order:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>1805-1919: Early Science Fiction</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>1920-1930: 1920s Early Pulp</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>1931-1937: 1930s True Pulp</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>1938-1946: Early (or First) Golden Age</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>1947-1959: Later (or Second) Golden Age</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>1960-1976 New Wave Science Fiction</b></div>
<br />
I freely admit these are very American-centric designations. I wonder if even Canadians would agree to them. The rest of the world certainly wouldn't. But I think it serves some use for discussions of USA-written science fiction.Dan Quigleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17883507268969517240noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2359173482617125328.post-45837048855984303162019-08-11T21:01:00.000-04:002019-08-29T12:39:35.964-04:00Science Fiction Works Published Before 1900<div style="text-align: center;">

Surprisingly, there are not that many of them. Here is a list I started on nineteenth century science fiction, the first century SF existed:</div>

In the Golden Age, science fiction often took for its setting Venus or some far advanced century. By the 1950s, authors set their sights closer to home, envisioning a new form of Hell next door and next year. Mass consumerism and enforced conformity were the social problems of the day. McCarthyism, blind patriotism, suburbia, and the hegemony of the nuclear family attacked individualist beatniks, homosexuals, and all other manner of social misfits. Many science fiction authors of the 1950s saw these societal trends and reacted with alarm, clearly expressed in their stories.<br />
<br />
The following is a list of works that best express 1950s angst over where society was heading:<br />

10) <b>Eric Frank Russell</b><br />
"...And Then There Were None" (1951). British writer's reaction against American Conservatism and conformity.<br />
<br />
The area of sex is an exception to the science fiction author as subverter of societal norms. Almost every author accepted society's strict taboos in this area. If they dealt with this theme at all, it was in strict conformance to Conservative dictates. Perhaps this area of life was too deeply ingrained in the American psyche for authors to challenge. There are two notable exceptions to this acquiescence, however.<br />

I am heavily (completely) indebted to Eric Leif Davin and his discussion of 1950s science fiction trends in Chapter 14 of <i>Partners in Wonder: Women and the Birth of Science Fiction 1926-1965</i>. This list is derived from his discussion of the topic. If you know of other works that add to or should cause me to modify the above observations, I would love to include them. Just send me a comment. I fully plan to update all my blog entries as I gain more information on the topics they cover.
